The Future of Wave Checking

Written By Trevor Moran on August 14th, 2009 with 1 Comment.

There are three kinds of surfers on this planet. The rich who live on the beach and just get to look out their window and check the waves just beyond their estate’s mote. Then there are those that live too far away from the beach that checking the waves with their actual eyes is totally out of the question so they check the cams on Surfline (or those who live on the beach and are total hermits).
Finally, there is me. I’m the guy who lives close enough to the waves that a walk isn’t out of the question,…

Photo of the Week (or month, or this may be a one time deal)

Linens N Nothings

As one of the photographers on this site, I feel its appropriate to share with whatever audience out there follows me some of the things that inspire me.
I stumbled upon the work of Brian Ulrich. I honestly don’t know much about him, but A. I really like the way his site works (similar to my new one) and B. I really like his photos.
Brian is working on a series of photos featuring stores and areas of commerce that have shut down during this global lack of a job. I feel bad for the people that have lost…

Sam's Epic One Footer

A few weeks back, we had a fundraiser to support the Dark Fall video.  While I don’t really feel like rewriting what has already been said, I will say that it was a blast.
Here are some of the top contenders for awesome photo of the night.   Enjoy

Stay Gold Teefyboy

Its gold Jerry... Gold.

Anyone who knows me probably also knows me by my common nickname:  Teef. Once you meet me face to face, it doesn’t take too long to notice my epic grill.  The result of years of dental torment, my teeth have taken on a persona all of their own.  If nothing else, my teeth are my trademark.
My mouth was healthy and beautiful up to the age of 3.  Baby teeth had come in perfectly and I was on my way to being a tooth model used in mouthwash commercials.  Unfortunately, there was an “accident” that cut me down from my prime.  While playing…

My trip was OZ-some!

Written By Trevor Moran on May 5th, 2009 with No Comments.

Yeah, I have an office in Sydney...

If you have been following my posts, you undoubtedly have heard that I went for a little adventure to Australia.  Now that I’m home, the photos are edited, and my clothes are clean, its time to share with you about my experience.  Despite the sarcasm, I seriously love Australia and can’t wait to go back.

I went down to stay with my brother, Jamie, who has been camped out there (not literally) for about 4 or 5 months now.  Airfare on V Australia was about $700 US round trip from LAX and with a free place to crash, I decided I…

Birth Notice: Surf Media Extraordinaire

So, we’ve established that people who have based their lives on surf photography are screwed.  Enough of the bitching, time to move on.  I’m a huge fan anything that moves the genre of surfing art forward and despite all the bad news in the media industry, I’m still optimistic.  Here are a few examples of new approaches and technologies that will be merging the surf photographer with the surf videographer to form the Surf Media Extraordinaire.
If you live on the East Coast and not under a rock, you probably have heard that Alex DePhillipo is making…

RIP Surf Photographer: 1945 – 2009

A problem is presented

The “Surf Photographer” is on his last life.
There is no doubt that the magazine industry is crumbling.  Advertising is down, page count is lowering, assignment stories are rare, and readership is following suit.  People can’t wait for the news to come monthly anymore.  We use RSS readers to get the news fast, as it happens.  Instead of reading who won Bells in Surfer, we watch it live.  Instead of waiting for photos from Hawaii in the spring issues of Transworld, we just check out Surfline’s day-to-day coverage while we check our morning e-mails.  And instead of reading…

How to use the Peter Sarsgaard SARS Guard

My taxi is booked, boots are tied, bags are packed, boards bubble wrapped, and souvenirs been purchased.  Err, well at least the first one is true…
Today is my last day abroad.  In a few hours I’ll be cruising from Sydney aboard a V Australia flight to LAX, then on another red eye flight back into Philly.  Jury is still out on V Australia.  I was on one of their very first flights out of the US when I came out this way, and we’ll see if a month later they’ve solidified their role as a contender, or if they’re going…

Quick Hello

Jamie Moran - Indo

Just throwing up a quick post as my first one.  For those who don’t know, check out my About Me page which I’ve just updated.  Currently I’m wrapping up a month long photo expedition in Australia and Indo.  I just got off a plane in Sydney – coming back through oz for a few days before heading back to Jersey at the end of the week.  This adventure has been rad for sure, but at the same rate has been physically taxing.  I’m looking forward to being able to sleep in my own bed instead of on a boat,…
