The other day I stumbled upon some “outtake” footage from filmmaker Kyle Pahlow’s latest flick, A Pleasant Surprise. For those of you who aren’t aware, Kyle’s film documents the surf personalities of several of New Jersey’s finest surfers. The film was shot entirely on 16mm film and really does a solid job capturing the feeling and essence of being a surfer from the Garden State. Defintiely a great watch for anyone interested.
Anyway, seeing as how Old Lady Winter seems to have settled in for the season here, I thought this outtake session of Rob Kelly and I from…
Behind The Scenes: A Pleasant Surprise
Fall Turnaround

I must admint, I was pretty nervous heading into this fall season. Despite a couple minor windswells, September and the first half of October was pretty lackluster in terms of swell. On top of that, the east coast saw unseasonably cold weather force its way in early and dash anyone’s hopes of an Indian Summer. Seeing as how I look forward to the Fall all year, I was pretty disappointed leading up to the middle of October.
But here we are on the closing day of November and I can safely say the the 2009 Fall surf season turned…
East Coast Super Session
As of recent, we have had a decent run of little swells that seems to have kept most east coast surfers content with the fact that winter is rapidly approaching. While there hasn’t been anything overly significant in terms of epic swell, I have definitely been making the most of some really great sessions here in Jersey.
The other day I came across some video of one of the better sessions I have had all season. For the middle part of September I spent some time down in North Carolina, which I guess has become an annual pilgrimage for…
Adam D. Charging

Back in August, I was lucky enough to take a last minute trip over to Tahiti with the likes of Andrew Gesler, Dean Randazzo, Zack Humphreys, and Clay Pollioni. When my brother, Treovr, and I booked our tickets the night before leaving we were already in the midst of a mad-scramble to line up everything needed to get ourselves to Tahiti on such short notice. It was like: pack 8 boards, pack 100lbs or camera gear, get new gear same-day expressed from Ezekiel, get a ride situated for our flight out of philly at 6am the next day, sunscreen,…
Grudge Match Pain
This year’s Garden State Grudge Match was nothing shy of spectacular once again. We waited two and a half weeks for a storm to produce anything near the realm of contestable in terms of waves, and even the night before the actual event it was suspect as to how exactly the conditions would fare when the sun peeked over the horizon the next morning. But, fortunately for everyone involved, Rob Cloupe’s (event orgnaizer, creator, and director) wizard-like ability to summon the gods of the ocean once again prevailed. It was a downright cold morning with air temps in the…
Going Right! In Tahiti?

Now when you hear the words “Tahiti” and “surfing” in the same sentence, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Is it Teahupoo? Most likely – and with good reason. It would be near impossible to ignore the onslaught of photos and video of this monster left that has captivated us all for the last decade. Few waves have pushed surfing’s limits the way Teahupoo has and because of that it has been squarely placed in the limelight for all to see. And when I was recently asked to join the “Dark Fall” film crew on…
Grudge Match Trash Talk
I can’t believe its October and feeling like December already. For most surfers in New Jersey, October represents that transitional period between seasons where the water is still relatively warm and the swell charts see a little more activity. It’s a time when “shoobies” no longer litter the inside bowls of your local break, but the need for the 3/2 reminds you that you better enjoy the last days of summer. But for a certain faction of New Jersey surfers, October means one thing and one thing only – the Grudge Match.
For those of you unfamiliar, the Grudge…
Brotherly Love

Back in the day (and I’m talking like 1992), my younger brother, Trevor, and I used to surf in the NSSA and ESA on a regular basis. We used to sit in the rain on bitter March mornings in our leg-zippered, unseamed 3/2 full-suits waiting for our heats as we set out to try and crush our opponents. Seeing as how he and I are three years apart in age we were usually in different divisions and thus always rooting each other on. But every three years or so we would find ourselves in the same division and facing…
Teahupoo Awakens

Yup, it’s official. Tahiti is the greatest place on earth. Amazing people, insane food, and heavy tubes – what else can a surfer ask for? The Dark Fall film crew has scored some super fun Tahiti, including solid photos and video segments. While mother nature didn’t produce 25 foot bombs at Teahupoo like we would have liked, Teahupoo did do it’s thing the other evening. There were some gaping barrels, stellar wipeouts, and heavy drops to be had all afternoon. Definitely enough to get some hearts pounding! Stay tuned all week for more photos and videos as they come…
The Joker Comes to Tahiti

Island paradise is in full effect for the boys participating in the filming of Dark Fall. Andrew Gesler, Dean Randazzo, Zack Humphreys, Clay Pollioni, Trevor Moran, Alex Dephillipo, and I arrived the other day and have been greeted with some super fun surf. We are posted up right in the village of Teahupoo, so our location is absolutely amazing. You can wake up and see Teahupoo from the porch. Really sick! We haven’t had any death-defying Teahupoo sessions yet but we did get a chance to get a couple fun barrels out there the other day. A couple feet…
