Indo, The Place to Be

Written By Jamie Moran on May 6th, 2010 with 4 Comments.

As my brother explained earlier this week in his most recent post, this spring hasn’t exactly been bountiful in terms of surf over here on the east coast. I may have been a little overzealous in my welcoming of the beautiful spring weather that took hold of our area early this year. It even crossed my mind that I might miss winter. For an instant, I felt like a hypocrite after all the times I prayed for warmth this winter only to be sitting here in 80 degree sunshine thinking back to some of the better swells that slammed…

Gold, Guns, Kirra

Written By Jamie Moran on April 29th, 2010 with 3 Comments.

It’s difficult to describe the feeling of surfing. Looking at photos and video of a surfer off in the distance, though often interesting, can only paint a limited picture of what the individual surfer is feeling or  experiencing at that given moment. Facial expressions, body language, the location, and the shape or size of the wave all help point the viewer in the right direction, but even these only scratch the surface. Conveying more than just a tiny fraction of the internal elements that the surfer is feeling at that moment is near impossible.
Fortunately, the amazing GoPro® Helmet…

Death to Winter

Written By Jamie Moran on April 22nd, 2010 with 2 Comments.

The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining – even as I write this at 7pm. No more cold, dark days with a distant sun sinking below the horizon before rush hour even begins. No more gloves, snowfall maps, or thermostat readings. It is spring. And I couldn’t be happier. Well…that’s not entirely true, but I’m certainly happier than if it was 20 degrees outside. While I’m not going to rant about how much winter can suck in Jersey (don’t get me wrong it has it’s moments), I did want to bid this past…

4 Days. 4 Flights. Gold Coast

Written By Jamie Moran on April 9th, 2010 with 1 Comment.

It was a long and grueling couple of days leading up to my arrival to the Gold Coast of Australia. Seeing as how I booked the ticket last minute, I knew ahead of time that I was going to have to work around some prior engagements, but I decided to charge it anyway in hopes that the payoff would be worth it. My travel adventure started on a Monday in California, then took me back to Jersey to pack and leave on that Wednesday and arrive in Australia by Friday. The travel went something like this: Catch a red-eye…

Reckless Beach Snowboarding

Written By Jamie Moran on March 24th, 2010 with 7 Comments.

Snowboarding is an amazing experience. But snowboarding in New Jersey can often fall into the lap of mediocrity. The two main ingredients for a good snowboarding session are often lacking in the Garden State – snow and hills. This year however we had an abundance of the white stuff but the hills were still non-existent (and I refuse to count highway overpasses as hills, no matter how many people embrace the sport of Parkway sledding). So in order to help fulfill our snowboard ambitions this winter, my brother Trevor and I got a little creative and picked up a…

Surviving an Avalanche

Written By Jamie Moran on March 8th, 2010 with 3 Comments.

Although I’m primarily a surfer, when winter time rolls around I am also an avid snowboarder. I grew up shredding the meager world class terrain of the Poconos (actually a lot of my time was spent with fellow contributor Kevin Richards in his cabin near Big Boulder). Eventually, I graduated from the bunny slopes of the East Coast to the back bowls of the Rockies, specifically Colorado. I fell in love with snowboarding backcountry style terrain where you could slash banks of powder and launch off cliffs into oblivion. And while hiking thousands of vertical feet and dropping in…

Getting Shacked vs. Getting Slammed

Written By Jamie Moran on February 26th, 2010 with 2 Comments.

So about a month ago, I had one of the more memorable sessions I’ve ever had surfing in New Jersey. It was your classic winter scenario with a south swell pushing up the coast and predicted offshore winds to arrive at first light. For those of you who are unfamiliar, these are the conditions New Jersey surfers dream about. For this swell I remember thinking to myself the night before that the waves were undoubtedly going to be good, but I didn’t think it would be a top 5 day by any means – the swell just wasn’t forecast…

Winter Warmth

Golden slabs are a Jersey signature

Obviously, this has been a brutal winter on a lot of levels. Between snowfall records, freezing cold temperatures, and bouts with relentless offshore winds I have begun to question how I have survived as a surfer in New Jersey. When most people think of surfing they imagine palm trees swaying the breeze, clean blue water, and beaches with scantly clad beach goers littering the shore line – in other words, paradise. But Jersey doesn’t exactly embody that concept. It’s more like old folks swaying in a stiff wind, dirty brown freezing water (temps are in the mid 30′s as…

Moran Mountain Opening Day

Written By Jamie Moran on February 19th, 2010 with 2 Comments.

Well, this certainly has been an interesting winter for all of us located on the Eastern seaboard. El Nino has taken charge of all weather patterns in the northern hemisphere, creating massive swells in the Pacific that have hammered Hawaii and the west coast, as well as making for a seriously cold and snowy couple of months in the major metropolitan areas like Philly, DC, and Balitmore. While most “nine-to-fivers” have been complaining about commutes and shoveling snow, I personally have been applauding the work of Mother Nature. If it’s gonna be cold, it might as well snow, right…

OC Crew on MTV

Written By Jamie Moran on December 24th, 2009 with 1 Comment.

Can you believe these idiots made their way onto MTV ??

Roll out the red carpet folks! For those of you who don’t know, a couple of our local shredders have successfully finagled their way into Hollywood’s limelight after being featured on a new MTV reality show called School of Surf. The show follows around two high school surfing teams as they hunt for the championship title in the Red Bull Riders Cup. And wouldn’t you know it, Ocean City High School is one of those high schools – Malibu High School is the other.
I had heard rumors and seen cameras several months back, but I’ll be honest I…
