The Biggest Surf Party Ever – Virginia Beach

Written By Jamie Moran on August 27th, 2010 with 2 Comments.

Well, it’s been a couple of years since my last visit to Virginia Beach for the annual ECSC (East Coast Surfing Championships) event, but having only been here one day I was instantly reminded of how out of control the surf/party scene is down here. People everywhere. Chicks everywhere. Huge scaffoldings. Pro surfers littering the lineups. Twelve foot vert ramps on the beach. Motocross ramps on the beach. Industry parties. Film premieres. Celebrity sightings. Complete pandemonium.
It’s hard to stay focused down here and you almost forget there is a surf contest going on. The main event of interest…

The Weirdest Dance Off Ever

Written By Jamie Moran on August 20th, 2010 with 3 Comments.

I recently discovered that my brothers are quite talented dancers and have been thoroughly shocked at their “enthusiasm” out on the dance floor. I filmed this on my phone the other day and felt the need to throw them under the bus. This really showcases Brad’s skills more than Trevor (for anyone at the last Dark Fall Premiere after-party you know what I mean). I’m headed down to Virginia Beach with Brad next week so I can only imagine what kind of dancing will be going down there. I’ll keep my phone handy in case my eyes are ever…

Shark Week

Written By Jamie Moran on July 20th, 2010 with No Comments.

Whenever I meet someone new and we are having the swapping-of-interests conversation, it is pretty much inevitable that surfing will come up due to its high rank on my list of favorite things to do in this world. Often times this conversation is with someone who knows very little about surfing and causes the triggering of the stock surfing questions – “So, what’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? Have you ever been to Hawaii?” And nine times out of ten, “Have you ever seen a shark?” Recently, this conversation concerning sharks has come up a lot between myself…

Rob Kelly Shredding Bali

Written By Jamie Moran on July 8th, 2010 with 2 Comments.

Well once again we have been wave starved here at home. Fortunately, some of our fellow Surfers Candy contributors are hitting the road to find real waves as opposed to waiting for them in their backyards. Rob Kelly just got back from a nice month long jaunt in Bali and has graced us with a little teaser of how he scored halfway around the world. I have a feeling we are going to see a lot more footage and photos in the coming weeks from his journey, seeing as how he was over there filming with Taylor Steele and…

Zack Eats it in Puerto

Written By Jamie Moran on June 24th, 2010 with 1 Comment.

If you know anything about Puerto Escondido, then you probably are aware that a majority of the surfing that happens there does so without a leash. Why would you want to surf macking 20 foot bombs without a leash attaching you to your board, you ask? Well, for one you don’t want that board thrashing wildly underwater only 6 feet from you head. With a leash you get the comfort of being able to rapidly recover you board after falling on a wave, but you also keep a heavy, sharp surfboard within striking distance of your body or your…

Funnest Wave Ever

Written By Jamie Moran on June 8th, 2010 with 5 Comments.

Here is a very small – I mean only the tip of the iceberg – glimpse of the pointbreak we surfed in Mexico. It’s a sand bottom peeling right with multiple barrel sections and a heavy drop on the good days. The people are few and far between but the heat is oppressive. It’s not necessarily a total secret where this wave is,  but don’t expect me to draw you a map. Do some research and the hassle of getting there will definitely be worth your while.

Cribs Mexican Style

Written By Jamie Moran on June 2nd, 2010 with 2 Comments.

If you have been keeping up with the Surfers Candy posts recently then you know that a large part of our crew jumped ship on Jersey two weeks ago and flew down to Mexico for some pre-summer surf relief. As the photos and videos start to trickle their way onto this site, I decided that in addition to making it known that we scored some epic surf that I would grind the salt into the wounds of our readers a little more by showing off the amazing accomodations that Dean Randazzo, Chris Kelly, and I shared while baking in…

Mexican Bombs

Written By Jamie Moran on May 24th, 2010 with 5 Comments.

Well, I couldn’t take it anymore. The flat spell at home was driving me insane so the other day I booked a last minute ticket to Puerto Escondido, Mexico to meet up with Zack Humphreys, Dean Randazzo, Chris Kelly, and Rich McMullin to chase down a massive swell and hopefully put my eyes on something other than knee-high dribble. The swell peaked over the weekend with literally 35-40 foot top to bottom bombs rolling through. I have never seen a beach break that size before in my life. It was definitely a day for a select few hell men…

Red Bull Flugtag Tryouts

Written By Jamie Moran on May 19th, 2010 with 4 Comments.

For those of you who don’t know, Red Bull is bringing the epic event of Flugtag to Philadelphia in September. Flugtag is an incredible event where teams of 5 people build a “flying” machine to be launched off of a 30 foot platform with the goal of having the contraption glide for the longest distance. The platform is over water where the flying device usually glides safely crashes horrifically into the designated harbor, lake, or in this case – the Delaware River. I have wanted to do this event for a long time – actually ever since I saw it…

One Fine Day in April

Written By Jamie Moran on May 13th, 2010 with 1 Comment.

Well, here we are. Another week has gone by and this spring season still has yet to deliver anything significant to wave starved surfers in the area. It’s times like these I’m glad that I make the most of any swell that comes our way. On days when the waves are firing (or even marginal for that matter) I find myself surfing as much as I can and for as long as I can. My friends know this well as I frequently stay out as long as I physically can or surf full sessions even when the waves don’t…
