Where Are You Going Tonight Frank? Some place exotic? Tahiti, Hawaii?

Written By Brad Moran on August 16th, 2011 with No Comments.

Billabong is taking the World Tour to the same place Frank Abagnale belittled his son in Catch Me If You Can. In a time where money clearly wins out over waves (cough, cough New York and San Francisco) it’s nice to see a glimpse of the Dream Tour is still alive.
Maybe, it’s the fact that I’ve seen the true carnage that Teahupoo can deliver (see Jamie’s picture in http://surferscandy.com/jamiemoran/2009/08/17/the-boys-go-to-tahiti/), but the Billabong Pro in Tahiti is by far my favorite contest to watch.
All the surfers pretend they want to have the contest in the biggest Teahupoo possible….

Wake Up Call

Written By Brad Moran on May 11th, 2011 with 2 Comments.

Well, there’s a couple things surfers can take away from the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro. Put some of the best, upcoming surfers in the world in one spot and give them a jersey and you will come away with about 100 A+ video clips.
Anyone aspiring to be a pro surfer should take this as a crushing wake up call. I hope you’ve been practicing your air reverses, because you’re going to need to be able to do about 3 on one wave every heat just to compete with these guys.
The brazilians showed in one on the most…

Hawaii Part Deux

Written By Brad Moran on February 4th, 2011 with 4 Comments.

I’m not going to bore you with all the amazing details of my trip to Hawaii in order to keep you from drooling over my words. This post may crush you even more if you have been living in the Northeast this winter due to snowstorm after snowstorm.
So, I decided to break it down to some highlights:

Surfing 8 foot Log Cabins only with Jamie (yes, yes I mean Hawaiian)
Watching Slater from Off the Wall annihilate Backdoor at the Pipe Masters.
Living at Sunset with the crew (even if most of it was fighting!) haha
Walking to…

Hawaii Part 1: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Written By Brad Moran on December 30th, 2010 with 1 Comment.

A couple of weeks ago, I realized I needed a tropical trip to prepare me for the long, brutal winter that approached rapidly. I finished all my finals, so I have a nice month long vacation. Although I prefer an uncrowned destination, some friends including Chris Kelly, Andrew Gesler, and Alex DePhillipo had rented a house in Hawaii, so I figured I’d head that way. Also, Jamie was out there, so it seemed like the only choice to avoid a solo mission somewhere. For those that don’t know, Hawaii in December is a mad scene in the surfing world. Pipe…

Virginia Beach Surfing and Motocross???

Written By Brad Moran on November 23rd, 2010 with 2 Comments.

Sorry for the span of no posts, but start of school = less traveling and less time to post, so I’m also backlogged. Some of the surfers candy crew ventured down to the always interesting Virginia Beach this past August. See http://surferscandy.com/jamiemoran/2010/08/27/the-biggest-surf-party-ever-virginia-beach/
Whether it’s the awful surf (although it was surprisingly good this year), the 14 year olds running around, or the crazy amount of crap  promotions (sometimes just spray painting kids) being handed out from the sponsors, Virginia Beach always creates memories for me. This year was no different.
Other than the surfing contest, the thing that stuck out…

Tahitian Goosebumps

Written By Brad Moran on August 19th, 2010 with 2 Comments.

I’m not sure if it’s the fact that i’ve seen Teahupoo up close and personal, or if it is just the fact that this is the heaviest wave in the world. Either way, this wave gives me chills every time I see footage of it. It may be expensive to get there and such, but Tahiti is the greatest place to travel. Every visit you make you will always leave with some skin missing due to the ridiculously sharp, shallow reef. The VonZipper Trials did not disappoint, and I hope the Billabong Pro is one for the ages. Let’s…

Swimming with Sharks

Written By Brad Moran on August 15th, 2010 with 4 Comments.

I stumbled on this video the other day. Apparently this guy is trying to become another statistic of fatal shark attacks. The story behind this is that some guy went paddle boarding with some friends. They were circled by some sharks. So, the guy went back out there the next day to capture it on his GoPro. Great for us. Not so smart of him.

Snow. In July?!

Written By Brad Moran on July 9th, 2010 with 3 Comments.

The recent hot waves along with the recent flat spells  have landed me in a whole lot of air conditioning. I keep trying to pretend to myself that the waves will be ridable every time I bring my board in the great Atlantic. Usually, I can sit out there and stand up on a wave once every hour. Well here’s a little video to keep you cold while you ice over those blisters from the hot sand. It should also give you a couple of funny laughs, too. P.S. the landing was awful as you will see throughout the…

2 Boards 1 Session

Written By Brad Moran on June 17th, 2010 with 7 Comments.

I’m sure the last swell is all still fresh in your mind if you’re a Jersey surfer. I hope you do, because it was our only significant swell for last month. Although it was probably memorable to you for good waves, it was memorable to me due to my loss financially. I finally had a decent quiver building, but a period of laziness has left me resorting to “old yellow.” It’s one of the few boards that has lasted the past couple of years. If you’ve seen it, you probably remember it. Anyone who plays the quiver game knows…

Surfline Forecast Surfline Forecast

Coming back from Australia, I found myself right back in the grind of school. Drexel University is a little weird, because they have trimesters rather than semesters. This means I have 3 ten week semesters throughout my school year rather than the usual 2 fifteen week. It’s great for the fact that I don’t start school until the last week of September. There are a couple annoying factors with it though. First, the trimesters are so crammed that it’s nearly impossible to skip classes and be able to catch up. Second, my school year doesn’t end until June, and…
