Check out Randazzo’s Story covered on the Live Strong blog

Dean Randazzo is a large part of why anybody in New Jersey is able to build a career as a professional surfer. His story is one of rising against the tide, overcoming adversity, and belief in “when determined, anything is possible.” Not only is he someone to look up to as a surfer, but as a person of strong heart and even stronger passion. I’m proud to call dean my friend. Check out the piece on Live Strong’s web log.

Love it When Home Goes Off!

Written By Andrew Gesler on April 5th, 2010 with 5 Comments.

Ocean City has been hard to leave when swell comes to town. With sand pumping week after week, there’s no telling what will happen when the surf picks up.. Chances are somewhere new is going to be doing something special, and, by special I mean top to bottom tubes. It’s flat now and the sand is pumping. I’m gonna keep my eyes on the growing beaches so when the surf starts doing the pumping I’ll know where to be..

In the Works

Written By Andrew Gesler on March 12th, 2010 with 2 Comments.

I’ve always enjoyed riding new surfboards for the first time. There’s nothing better then preparing your new board for it’s maiden voyage. Most of the time the preparation begins after purchasing you board from one of your local surf shops. Then you get down to it,  you know, applying wax, trac-pads, fins, and leash, all that good stuff. But, if you’ve ever had a chance to design something custom with a board builder, then the preparation starts well before pulling the board off the rack.
I got together with Brian Heritage and designed the Hawk. We talked over what I…

Pier Bowled in H.B.

I was out west mid January to compete with the Fox surf team in the Katin Team Challenge. We ended up taking 4th place in surf that was Maxing out the North side of Huntington Pier. I almost killed my self trying to advance out of my first round heat. Out of the three other competitors in the line up, only six waves were caught due to the strong drift into the pier and less than desirable closeouts bombs coming through. I needed a score, and pretty much gave up on trying to find a good wave and turned…

Last weekend Alex DePhillipo’s New Jersey surf Documentary, “Dark Fall” played a trailer at the largly hyped “pre”-premiere of poor specimens latest production “Modern Collective.” Showing right in the middle of a block of films including “Gum for My Boat” which takes an intimate look into the growth of the Bangladesh surf club, Red Bulls “Mentawais Super Trip” showcasing some of the energy drinks top athletes, the “Dark Fall” teaser boasted some of the loudest reactions in the theater!

The Theater was packed for two nights straight as the Film Festival logged in yet another successful year. Much thanks…

For now I am Tahitian

Written By Andrew Gesler on August 21st, 2009 with 6 Comments.

Top of the Mountain. It took about thirty minutes to climb up the shear mountain-side covered in thick ferns and about seven minutes to slide down!

I came to Tahiti for one reason, Teahupoo. The slab left has beckoned to me ever since I first saw images of her in the early 1990′s. As a grom I saw shot after shot of my favorite surfers tame the wave of consequence, putting themselves in potentially life threatening situations for the love of tube riding. The fear I have of this wave and my endless desire to overcome such fear is what drives me to conquer her. I want to get Bowled!
I’m in Tahiti now and chopes has yet to show her face. The swell we…

Grommethood

Pennywise shouting to the youth!

Last week, I had a conversation with a woman about the surf lessons her daughter had taken with Ocean City local professional surfer, Matt Keenan, and how much her overall approach on each wave had improved. I started thinking about the summer ahead, and summers past, and how important it is to our surf scene to have guys like Matt in the line-up. The guy enjoys surfing so much that he wants to share his stoke with up coming grom in the surf, and he goes out of his way to take them in under his wing.. I think…

Water Coach

Last week the National Surfing League (NSL) got together with Red Bull, for the third straight year, and ran their high school qualifying event for The Red Bull Riders Cup. Brad Gerlach and Shaun Burrell, two well known and accomplished professional surfers from southern CA, are the minds behind the NSL, and responsible for bringing surfing and their “surf game” format to the X-Games in years past. I can remember watching surfing debut into the X-Games at Huntington Beach in 2003, where the venue was set up with huge stadium bleachers along the waters edge, a score board and…

No surf here, but you could see where ancient oceans ripped through the earth.. Can you imagine cavemen ripping??

Im Home! I just spent the last week in a mental whirlwind, of solitude, diners, truck-stops, energy drink, and 15 hours a day at 80+ mph. I took interstate 15, made a bet in Vegas, lost, and made my way north to the 70. Interstate 70 took me through Utah and Colorado where the drive amongst the mountainside and through canyons was spectacular before I hit Kansas where boredom set in and I wished for a quick death.  Middle of the country is the toughest leg, I hoped to see a twister rip through the road and send me off to the land of Oz as I sped…

Dark Fall is a project I’ve been working on with fim maker Alex DePhillipo. The film is a proper documentary of surf culture in NJ. Eastern Surf Magazine’s editor, Matt Pruit, has graced the project with words that portay the heart and soul behind all the hard work everyone involved has put fourth into this project. I recomend you take a few minutes and read this article on ESM’s webpage and if you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out at the bottom of the article. Make sure to pick up a printed copy when the mag hits…
