I was out west mid January to compete with the Fox surf team in the Katin Team Challenge. We ended up taking 4th place in surf that was Maxing out the North side of Huntington Pier. I almost killed my self trying to advance out of my first round heat. Out of the three other competitors in the line up, only six waves were caught due to the strong drift into the pier and less than desirable closeouts bombs coming through. I needed a score, and pretty much gave up on trying to find a good wave and turned on the biggest thing that came through. The bomb took me high-speed towards the pier giving me only the opportunity to snap under the lip and come flying out with the explosion, dead set for the most piling congested part of the pier, the “T”. I bailed, turned on my sonic the hedgehog forcefield and hoped for the best. When I came up, I had traveled between the barnacle covered, concrete “life-enders” with out a scratch. I made the heat, but I scared the crap out of myself..

Moment before the bail, and my pinball manuever..

The pics below are from one of the free surf sessions I had on the south side of HB pier during the event with Ryan Carlson, Jesse Evans, and the Turner bros. There was an against the grain left barrel that offered one of the sickest views of the pier I’ve seen, inside lookin out… We traded off catching “the one,” a wave that appeared to be a closeout into the pier that offered a perfect tuberide and exit about ten feet in front of the treacherous pilings. There was no “Huntington hop” going on this session, just perfect drainers and punchy air sections! We had a blast!

I came to Tahiti for one reason, Teahupoo. The slab left has beckoned to me ever since I first saw images of her in the early 1990’s. As a grom I saw shot after shot of my favorite surfers tame the wave of consequence, putting themselves in potentially life threatening situations for the love of tube riding. The fear I have of this wave and my endless desire to overcome such fear is what drives me to conquer her. I want to get Bowled!

I’m in Tahiti now and chopes has yet to show her face. The swell we came down for was thwarted by poor wind conditions and now it’s time to wait. The ocean has a funny way of testing my patience. Hurricane Bill is heading up the East Coast on one of the best storm tracks I’ve seen in a long time, pretty much guaranteeing epic surf at home, and, although we’ve had some fun rip-able sessions at Teahupoo and the surrounding reef passes, I remain to feel empty handed and lost in the wrong hemisphere while my home breaks are lighting up. I won’t be leaving until I get my wave..

To pass the time we’ve fished, played a round or two of “Coconut Bocce”, a game of soccer, we even climbed the mountain behind our tahitian residence “Chez Biff,” pretty much all we can to burn the minutes. Traditional Tahitian tattoos may be next on the list before the next swell arrives.. So, until I see the beast awakens, I am Tahitian, and I will be here at Teahupoo waiting..

I started thinking about the summer ahead, and summers past, and how important it is to our surf scene to have guys like Matt in the line-up. The guy enjoys surfing so much that he wants to share his stoke with up coming grom in the surf, and he goes out of his way to take them in under his wing.. I think it’s a good way to be, and I try to do the same. I can remember back to what it was like to being a grom..

In fact, I attribute the generations that surfed before me for the passion and personal aspirations I have for my own endeavors in the sport. I can remember vividly being a grom, or young surfer, and learning how to surf. I looked up to the older guys in the line-up, they taught me respect, technique, and to overcome the fear of catching the bigger waves. It was tougher then, if you cowered when someone shouted, GO, on the wave of the day, you may have dodged a beating in form of a wipeout, but you were sure to get tortured for it on the beach. There were the guys that took you in and watched you closely, pros that set the standard, the older crew that told crazy stories and then told you to go home, and your peers. Surfing had it’s own school, an unwritten right of passage and when you grow up in the scene, you know what’s up. We’d always watch guys like Matt, who was usually the best guy in the line up. We’d look to him for his cutting edge style and approach. Matt and his peers would often offer advice if they saw us struggling in or out of the water. There were always unforgettable moments and people. For instance, lifeguard Jimmy Kirk. He wasn’t a big guy, but the look he gave you when he spoke to you put the tail between your legs. He knew who was who, and we knew he was a legend. He would stop my crew friends from paddling out on the biggest day of the summer, and, with a pointed finger and a sinister scowl, grant two of us permission to paddle out, the rest were forced to watch. And they did, because that’s was the way it was, no getting around it.

Every year I grow further away from the kid I used to be, and it seems a whole group of young surfers replace the crew I remember being a part of. Each year the groms rally together and push each other’s progression in the sport. They feed off each other like brothers and sisters, rolling around in rat packs, growing through the trials and tribulations of adolescents, and surfing. When I leave for a few months I come home to see them ripping harder than ever before.

In my last column I brushed on the fact that Ocean City had been victorious in the Red Bull Riders Cup. OCHS has established itself as a dominant surf team for years, and I feel it is directly derived from the town itself and the brotherhood I’ve been trying to explain. All the groms that surfed in the event on that final day spend their days surfing in Ocean City. The OC Surf Team all surf together, make surf films on youtube, shoot photos, eat, fight, scheme, and party together. They are a family. Chris Kelly, Pat Westman, Zack Kreiser, and Sean Santiago started for OC this year. They’ve worked their way up the line-ups and all surf really well. I surf with these guys often and rarely do I go home unimpressed. Though it will lose seniors Chris and Pat, the team has depth and, the bench is ready for next year. The cool thing is, when the seniors leave next year, they will remain connected to the surf scene, and their surf team for years to come. Last years MVP, Rob Kelly, was back from competing nationally this year, to coach along side Mark Medima and Matt Keenan, the team his younger brother Chris would lead to victory once again.

The Red Bull Riders Cup is a big deal. It has grown into a major part of the High School Surf Teams agenda. The OC boys will be competing in the championship event at Upper Trestles, a world-renowned surf spot, in San Clemente, CA. These kids are in the limelight now, not only will they be gunning for a national title; the entire road for the cup is being documented for a six episode television series for MTV. A film crew, from VBS productions, has followed the team around town for the past two weeks. They’ve been interviewed, filmed in the surf, and they even partied back stage at a punk rock show in Philadelphia. A crew of us went to the Electric Factory last Thursday to see Pennywise, a band largely known in the surf world for their politically edgy and fast paced sounds featured in many surf flicks over the years. The guys from VBS gave me a backstage pass and we worked out getting some unreal footage, behind the scenes and under the venues security teams radar. After the show I asked lead singer, Jim Lindberg, who had been giving shout outs to the surf team during the performance and a big help to the film crew, if we could get the groms backstage to meet the band. Jim is a cool individual and he was stoked to meet the team he’d been hearing about all night. He actually came to the side door with me to let them in personally. Talk about an epic night! These kids are actually living like rockstars for the next few weeks, and it’s Rad!

Pennywise shouting to the youth!

The surf scene is made up of people who surf, and every one of them, when not too frustrated with the excessive crowds of the summer, tries to teach by good example. Some will go out of their way to lend a friendly tip or two on how to improve. Some of the “Old School” lessons are still being learned, and sometimes the old school learns from the groms. I assume, from what I’ve seen elsewhere, that most surf towns are this way. I’m fortunate to know this town’s surf culture intimately, and I cherish being a part of it through the thick and thin. There is a familiar sense out in the surf and the respect for each other and Mother Ocean is our common bond. It’s growth and progression that keep the surf town lively, like the fountain of youth the ocean and the community within makes it hard for a surfer to grow old.

Last week the National Surfing League (NSL) got together with Red Bull, for the third straight year, and ran their high school qualifying event for The Red Bull Riders Cup. Brad Gerlach and Shaun Burrell, two well known and accomplished professional surfers from southern CA, are the minds behind the NSL, and responsible for bringing surfing and their “surf game” format to the X-Games in years past. I can remember watching surfing debut into the X-Games at Huntington Beach in 2003, where the venue was set up with huge stadium bleachers along the waters edge, a score board and instant replay screen hung from the pier, and the East coast vs. West coast team match-ups made for one of the coolest new events the world of surfing had ever seen. I was nineteen at the time, and with a VIP pass for the event, I couldn’t imagine anything better than watching my heros compete in such a surreal setting. The best part about this format is that it provides a team based event similar to one you’d see in a main stream professional arena, with strategy in using substitutions and timeouts, and it all runs in a spectator friendly three periods. Total run time is about two hours, short and sweet and AWESOME! The format had success for three years in the X-Games, as well as in a pro tour known as the California Cup, but for the past few years has lived through it’s High School version.

Water Coach

A few new Jersey Pros were involved with the event, including a couple contributors of this webpage. Sam Hammer was the head referee for the Game, while Dean Randazzo and Kevin Richards judged. It is not only a fun event to work, but also great way to stay involved with the upcoming youth who are always nipping at our heals.. I coached for Middle Township, a group of tough competitors, who gave the event favorite, Ocean City, a close battle to the end. When Middle wasn’t competing, I filled in as a commentator, and had a blast hyping up the action in the line-up, much like I had experienced back in H.B. as a grommet. The Final for the event was very close, and extremely exciting. For the three years Red Bull and the NSL have been running this event nation wide, this was said to be the most successful as far as great surf, close competition, and a beach full of screaming fans. It was absolutely insane, the entire venue knew what was going on in the line up, who needed what score, and when Mikey Ciramella threw a crazy, fins free, reverse to drop a 9pt score, the beach erupted. Ocean City had the bottom of each period and when Chris Kelly started his team off, in pursuit of an 18pt lead Middle had regained, The crowd went nutz with every turn. Ocean City came out with the win for the third straight year, and, with the growth in popularity of the Riders Cup, a special year it was.

Mikey Ciramello slashes while Coach Ges talks strategy with beach coaches Brian Heritage and Frank Walsh

Ocean City Coach Matt Keenan congratulates team MVP Chris Kelly on pulling off the win

Having involvement with the game initially as a spectator and over the years as a coach/commentator I can only hope that the idea, that Brad Gerlach and I discussed post event, of bringing the format back to the professional arena materializes. I honestly couldn’t imagine an event I’d have more fun as a participant. Of the surfers I know that would be involved, and the young athletes coming up through these high school events, New Jersey will have a powerhouse pro team that I think would be a contender for a national title for years to come. So, until then my fingers are crossed.

Im Home! I just spent the last week in a mental whirlwind, of solitude, diners, truck-stops, energy drink, and 15 hours a day at 80+ mph. I took interstate 15, made a bet in Vegas, lost, and made my way north to the 70. Interstate 70 took me through Utah and Colorado where the drive amongst the mountainside and through canyons was spectacular before I hit Kansas where boredom set in and I wished for a quick death. Middle of the country is the toughest leg, I hoped to see a twister rip through the road and send me off to the land of Oz as I sped past the monotonous country side of corn fields and giant bible belt crosses. It’s at this point in the solo mission that my mind becomes overwhelmed with the determination to get home and I cruise for hours calling my friends, shouting out the window, driving through random country towns, even get a speeding ticket to break unchanging sequence of milage. The good part about that drive, it makes a trek up or down the East coast in search of waves seem minor, and it feels really good to finally make it home. I had a surf session with Kevin Richards at our home break in Ocean City that, on any other week would have been mediocre, but the fact I was in the ocean and not landlocked for hours made the session much more than it was. It’s good to be home and I’ll see you all around!

California has been home for a good part of my winter, I’ve been spending time with family out here. I’ve been between NJ and CA for a few years now, since I had my daughter, Rory Jaye. I love it out here for more reasons than one, obviously my family is at the top of the list, surfing out here is a daily routine, call that number two. One more reason would be, that being away from home helps you remember why you love the places you miss. The weather has been pretty good out here, and I’ve been surfing almost every day so I’m not complaining.. But, like I said, there is something about being back in Jerz that puts a smile on my face. An upcoming swell looked to be pretty promising and the weather seemed committed to proving that spring was in full effect, so I booked my flight back east expecting to get some work done. It was good to be home, I caught up with film maker Alex Dephillipo and we got to work on his latest project, Dark Fall. Along with Sam Hammer, Mike Gleason, Matt Keenan, and Clay Pollioni, I surfed a few session and had a blast in fun end of winter surf. It felt good to be back in the cold Atlantic ocean. I finished off the trip with a night out in Atlantic City and flew back to CA after three days. After that quick trip I’m actually looking forward to the three day cross country drive back east before the end of this month. Check out Surfline.coms coverage of the latest NE swell by clicking the photo below.
